Brenda’s Background

Born and raised in rural southern Indiana, Brenda's higher education culminated in a PhD in Geriatrics/ Nursing. She started her nursing career at a VA hospital in Indianapolis. She and her husband Woodie moved their family to North Carolina from Texas in 1994 when she accepted a position she held for 14 years as the Executive Director of the North Carolina Center for Nursing, a state funded agency affiliated with UNC General Administration. Woodie remains a state employee and is a leader in information security. Their two sons are both graduates of Wake County public Schools and UNC-Chapel Hill, where their older son attended medical school and their younger son did his undergraduate work. Brenda is a nurse researcher with a strong policy background. While not a Washington insider, she learned a great deal about Washington, as well as in-depth policy analysis while commuting to DC, where she served as a Director at the AARP Public Policy Institute from 2008-2011.
